Start your Vancouver strata move-out with the building’s rules and elevator bookings. Then pack, move the furniture out, clean the empty suite and arrange the final keys-and-fobs handover.

Confirm the strata rules and access arrangements

Start a move folder before you start filling boxes. Obtain the building’s current bylaws, rules and move-out instructions, then work backwards from its confirmed requirements. Keep these documents with your booking confirmations, moving date and handover notes so you have one place to check the plan.

The Government of British Columbia explains that strata bylaws and rules apply to owners, tenants, people living with them and visitors, and that the strata council enforces them. Turn the current move instructions into a short list of questions rather than relying on a previous resident’s arrangements.

Ask whether a move fee applies, what booking steps are needed and who confirms the reservation. Record the answer alongside the instructions you receive. Keep the move booking separate from the cleaning appointment: a reserved moving window does not answer every question about a later service visit.

The Government of British Columbia says common property typically includes hallways and elevators in a condominium. Check your building’s instructions for using those spaces, including the loading bay or loading area, rather than treating them as an extension of your suite.

Use this checklist when you contact the building:

  • Confirm how to reserve the elevator and loading area, if applicable.
  • Ask which entrance and route the movers should use.
  • Ask about elevator pads and floor protection, including who arranges them.
  • Confirm any instructions for service visitors arriving after the move.
  • Save the confirmation and contact details with your moving documents.
  • Beside unanswered questions, record whom you contacted and your next follow-up step.

Many Vancouver strata buildings handle access differently, so write down the details for your own address. Give the movers the relevant instructions before moving day. Check that their planned arrival and departure fit the confirmed booking. Include the suite number and booking date when forwarding instructions, so the movers can match the document to your move.

Sort, pack and book the clean

Plan the clean for after the movers have gone. Put the movers, empty-suite clean, final review and handover on one calendar, with access arrangements for each appointment. An empty suite gives you access to the edges of rooms, closet shelves and spaces previously occupied by furniture.

Make a room-by-room packing list, including storage cupboards, bathroom drawers and the space above kitchen cabinets. Mark each area as packed only after you have checked it. A cupboard with one remaining bag is not yet ready for its interior to be wiped, even if the rest of the kitchen looks empty.

Keep three lists: belongings to move, items to leave by arrangement and cleaning tasks. This keeps a cleaning note such as ‘wipe wardrobe shelves’ from getting lost among furniture instructions. Use the same room names on boxes and on the lists so you can compare them without translating between labels.

For a rental, request the landlord’s checklist before finalising your cleaning plan. Compare it with the tasks you intend to do yourself and the scope of any booked service. Write specific questions about cupboard and appliance interiors instead of assuming that every interior is part of the booking.

Leave your cleaning kit unpacked if you are doing the work yourself. Group cloths, your vacuum and floor-cleaning tools together, and keep a bag for the final loose items you find. Plan how those tools will leave the suite after the clean, rather than sending them away with the first load.

Pack decorative items before the things you still use daily. Keep a small departure bag for toiletries, a change of clothes and personal paperwork. Give that bag a distinct label so it travels with you rather than disappearing into the moving load.

Moving day

Begin with the building instructions and the confirmed moving window. Review the entrance, loading arrangements and elevator process with the movers before the first load. For elevator and floor protection, follow the arrangements you confirmed with the building; ask about any missing detail before unloading equipment or bringing furniture through.

Keep a small moving-day folder or phone note open with the reservation and contact details. Add a simple status list: truck arrived, rooms emptied, final belongings collected and cleaning access arranged. This gives you an overview when several people are asking questions at once.

As each room empties, do a belongings check rather than beginning the detailed clean. Open drawers, look through closets and check behind doors. Put anything found into a clearly labelled final box. Keeping that box separate avoids reopening several packed cartons to fit in a few loose possessions.

Before the movers leave, walk through the suite once more. Check that furniture intended to go has gone and that items intended to stay remain in the agreed place. Look at the spaces the furniture covered and add any newly visible cleaning tasks to your list.

Keep the entry key and any fob needed for the clean separate from the items scheduled for handover. Write down who will provide access, how your cleaner will enter and how the suite should be locked afterwards. Confirm those arrangements before you leave.

Finish with a handover inventory: suite keys, building fobs and any other access devices you have been asked to return. Note the intended recipient and handover arrangement. If the clean is still ahead, keep the access plan active until it is finished, then complete the return according to the arrangements you have confirmed.

The move-out clean, room by room

Work through the empty suite in a consistent order, with floors last. Keep your checklist beside you and mark a task complete only after checking the whole surface. For a booked clean, compare this working list with the agreed scope, especially where cupboards or appliance interiors are concerned.

  1. Kitchen cupboards and drawers: Empty them completely before wiping the interiors yourself. Work from one end of the kitchen to the other, checking shelf corners and drawer bottoms. Finish cabinet fronts and hardware after the contents have gone, so you are not handling freshly wiped doors throughout packing.

  2. Kitchen appliances and work surfaces: Separate the stovetop, range hood, filters, microwave interior, fridge top and oven door glass into individual tasks. List other appliance interiors separately when discussing the booking. Include the backsplash, sink and faucet rather than treating the appliances as the whole kitchen job.

  3. Bathrooms: Work through the tub, shower, glass doors, toilet, sink, faucet and mirror. Include tiles and grout lines on the checklist. Empty bathroom storage before starting, and collect the final toiletries in your moving-day bag rather than putting them back on a finished counter.

  4. Rooms and closets: Check shelves, sills, door frames and switch plates. Hand-wipe baseboards and wipe vent and register covers. For empty closets and wardrobes, work across each shelf and through the interior before returning to the room’s remaining details.

  5. Floors and final review: Vacuum throughout, including edges and corners. Use the floor’s care instructions to guide any mopping. Revisit the doorway of each room and compare what you see with the checklist before collecting the cleaning tools.

For a more detailed kitchen task, the steps for degreasing a range hood filter can sit alongside your main list. Keep the overall room checklist short enough to use while working; put longer task instructions on a separate note. Leave unfinished tasks unticked, with a specific note about the surface still needing attention before your final review.

Towers and walk-ups across Vancouver

Vancouver’s strata homes include downtown towers and three-storey walk-ups, with access handled differently from building to building. Capture the actual entrance and route in your notes, not simply the unit number. Include where supplies can be brought in and any confirmed parking arrangement.

In Coal Harbour tower homes, concierge buildings sit alongside seawall townhomes and some low-rise buildings. Plan the clean after the movers leave so the suite is empty and the cleaning visit is not competing with the move for the service elevator. Include any confirmed front-desk steps in the access notes.

The West End’s apartments and walk-ups include three- and four-storey walk-ups, mid-century rental towers and newer strata condos. Many buildings ask residents to reserve an elevator or loading area for a move. Check which arrangements apply to your address, and make the floor and entrance clear in the cleaning instructions.

For a walk-up, state the floor explicitly rather than leaving someone to infer it from the suite number. If your building has a visitor stall, add its number and directions for reaching it. These are useful details to collect while you still live there and can check the route yourself.

Many Vancouver leases turn over at month-end, so arrange your move-out clean once your date is set. Update your movers and cleaner if the moving sequence changes.

Frequently asked questions

How can I keep track of belongings donated before the move?

Make a collection log. Record the item, the person or organisation collecting it and the agreed pickup arrangement. Cross it off only when it has left, rather than when someone first expresses interest.

Can I prepare the move-out checklist for someone else?

Yes. Make one shared document with the suite address, confirmed dates and a named contact for each appointment. Give the person moving a short decision list, such as which belongings stay and which cupboards still need emptying.

How should I organise photos taken while packing?

Group them by purpose. Keep furniture assembly photos separate from pictures of packed contents, and give each album a clear name. Photograph a box’s label with its contents so you can connect the picture to the right carton later.

Where should I put appliance manuals during a move?

Keep them together. Use a labelled folder for manuals and any notes you intend to leave with the suite, rather than packing them among your personal paperwork. Add that folder to your final handover list.
